I have been treating children with ADD since before the spectrum was a diagnosis. I have seen how children with ASD became harder to treat through the years also. The reasons for that are complex. Infections like PANS/PANDAS and Lyme and its co infections are certainly a major factor. Testing has come a long way and is absolutely necessary. ASD treatments range from natural therapies that have been around like food allergy tests to Stem cell treatment. I have seen many children lose the academic career and be told it is psychiatric in nature, and put on medication for it. It breaks my heart to see a child misdiagnosed this way and endure side effects of medications not properly prescribed. The proper diagnosis not investigated is a medical travesty in my honest opinion.
Geriatric population experiencing dementia or memory loss is similar in testing for things like Lyme or other infections. But here we want to be aware of hormones and medication side effects that could have be a major factor. We are also have an alarming rate of adult ADHD diagnosis right now- this can be treated naturally very often.
I have a deep personal understanding of chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, and the challenges that come with navigating the healthcare system. My own health journey began in my 20s when I was on active duty military. Medical doctors were not attentive to my symptoms and I was not properly diagnosed for over a decade. Like many women, I was told I might have multiple sclerosis or ALS. I was a patient before I was a doctor and I was gaslit, not listened to, and very medically traumatized... like so many of my patients.
It wasn’t until much later that I discovered I likely contracted Lyme disease while living in Connecticut, which eventually led to a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis, or ME. Of course I had CFS or chronic fatigue syndrome also, how could I not be tired. Unfortunately, I wasn’t given timely treatment—such as antibiotics or steroids—that could have minimized the damage to my spinal cord.
My recovery was 5 long years. I did so much research and writing to heal myself and learned what doesn't work- which is sometimes the most important thing!
